A guide to taking photographs of your horse

I am perfectly happy to work from any photographs that you provide, but there are some guidelines I must insist on.

  1. When photographing your horse try not to point the camera into the sun. It will only create a silhouette of your horse.
  2. Make sure that there is plenty of natural light available. Choose a sunny day to take the photo. The more detail and lighting, the better.
  3. If you require a portrait (just the head and neck of your horse) then try and take close up of the horse. This will help capture detail and flesh tones that are really important in these types of paintings.
  4. Unless you specifically require it, try not to photograph your horse with tack on.

If possible, send me more than just one picture to work from. It can help to build a feel for the horse and its surroundings if I can work with plenty of reference material.

If you are using a professionally taken photograph, make sure you have the copyright to the picture. I can't produce something that infringes someone else's copyright.

When you post the photographs, make sure you use backboard envelopes or jiffy bags with stiff card in them so that the photos don't bend and get damaged. When the painting is finished I will return all of the photos back to you. Also remember to include all of your contact details including name, address and telephone number. You would be surprised at how many people forget!

Finally, if having received your photographs and they prove not to be adequate, I will telephone you to discuss any further options. I may have to travel and take the photographs myself, in which case I would have to make a traveling cost charge.

Prices : Commissions are priced individually but as a rough guide I charge about £300 for a 24" x 18" acrylic painting & £150 for an A3 sized drawing

Payment Details

Once I have received your photographs, and I can use them, I will telephone you to discuss a price and give you a completion date of the painting. This will largely depend on current commitments, and the amount of work involved in the painting.

Before any work can begin I would require a deposit of 50% of the total price.

When the painting is finished I will send you a photograph. You may then make any minor amendments. Once this has been done, and you are happy with the finished painting, the remaining 50% payment must be made. The picture will then be posted to you or we can arrange a pick up in person.
If the picture is to be posted, then a charge will be made for Postage and Packing.
